Spalted Sugar Maple Bowl
Our sister turned this bowl from locally sourced spalted Sugar Maple wood. It takes our sister upto 10 hours of active work to bring our bowls to you. She is sometimes there at the felling of the tree, and wouldn't trust anyone else to make the first chainsaw cuts to bring the piece down to working size. From there, our sister designs each bowl individually, taking care to reveal the natural beauty of the wood's own grain.
Since these turnings are all from green wood, they will continue to move over the years. The bowl is effected by the atmosphere -- it will expand and contract, etc., and rarely be perfectly round. Over the years, the wood will darken. Each bowl is an original because every tree is different and reacts differently due to the grain in the wood, etc.
It is finished with mineral oil and beeswax, which is food-safe and non-toxic.
